Seventeen years after the launch of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg announced the company’s new corporate name, Meta. In an effort to restore the company’s public image, Zuckerberg said the name change would pave the way for new brands, emphasizing Facebook’s contribution to the technology world.
According to NPR, the Facebook app will be named after what we all know and love, but the company will be branded under the meter to move from a social media platform to the driving force of technological innovation.
“It’s time to embrace a new company’s brand to incorporate everything we do,” Zuckerberg said. “From now on, we will be Metavers first, not Facebook first. Creating our social media app will always be an important focus for us, ”he said. “But at the moment, our brand is so strongly associated with a product that it can’t represent what we’re doing in the future.”
Zuckerberg said Metavers is the next computing platform that people will dedicate their time, money and attention to over the next few years and Meta wants to play a big role in turning innovation into a thriving business.
For those of you who aren’t familiar, the term ‘metavers’ refers to a virtual space where people can play games, attend concerts and meetings, and even buy a variety of digital products and services. Although the Facebook app has already incorporated many of these features, Zuckerberg says he wants to take things to the next level.
What could be the next level of that? Well, Zuckerberg demonstrated one of his many ideas in a video presentation that showed the Facebook CEO riding a virtual reality electric hydrofoil, a fence with a hologram, and a 3D image of his home.
Did not specify when the rebranding would take effect.
