Shannon Lee is doing it for herself


“Geist” is the German word for “spirit”. Indo-folk lyricist Shannon Lee stumbled upon the word as she walked through an old music terminology book and the word hit her. After discovering its meaning, he realized that the term highlighted his fifth record-making experience, so he decided to name the album Geist.

“The idea of ​​the soul flows evenly through this record,” Lee says Spin Above zoom. “While I was making it, I was going through an intense moment and I saw that the human soul found peace in this chaos. It was really great to appreciate how resilient we can be. ”

With Ghosts, Le has come close to finding its original frequency. He embraced his insecurities and was relieved of the discomfort, especially when he came out of the punk scene as a folk artist. Lee played guitar at the garage-rock band FEELS, and he left the band in January 2020 to focus on his solo career.

“When someone said,‘ Oh, it was so pretty, ’it would put a bad taste in my mouth,” Lee explains. “I was like, ‘No, it has to be agile and tough and cool.’ I wanted to embrace what is special about the music that I create, for which it requires a certain amount of consistency.

Stability is a lasting quality of Lee’s music, and this is especially true Ghosts. Opener “Rare to Wake” inspired by Frank Herbert’s science-fiction novel Hill, Focuses on the interaction between Lee’s silent, contemplative voice and his finger-picked nylon-string guitar. The track below, “A Thread to Find”, describes a deja-vu experience of Ley while visiting an old Swiss hotel. His music is deeply stimulating, and it takes a certain amount of thought to truly appreciate it.

Ghosts Often mixes reality and fantasy in a way that can feel heavy despite the gossipy tones of the music. This is why Lee feels compelled to close the album with the instrumental track “July”, which takes a moment off after his previous nine songs.

“I hope it encourages people the way music hits their bodies,” Lee said. “I would encourage people to love that song to encourage them to breathe and have a moment to appreciate the stillness. Hopefully, you were encouraged to experience it while listening to the whole thing.”

Its focus Ghosts, Musically speaking, Lee and his guitar. It’s a relationship he’s built throughout his career, but it’s reached his apotheosis on this album. Similar to the record as a whole, the guitar drew music to Lee as a form of healing, and it was here that he found a way to exploit the environment around him.

“It’s not always about being technically good at something,” Lee says. “Do you see the pattern in it? Do you hear the melody in it? There are so many different forms of intelligence, so it helped me to discover myself and to feel better about who I was and who I was.

Through this process of self-discovery, he realized an important point: “I want to do it for myself,” he says. “I am sick of trying to influence everyone. It’s really tiring, and I think everyone can relate to that feeling.
